Our Story
At a time when cell phones were going smaller and smaller in size with Motorola Startac as a status symbol, four grade school friends finished college and took up separate jobs in four different countries, USA, Canada, Australia and Hong Kong. After Months of fat phone bills as a result of keeping in touch with each other, one of them decided to do some research. After much reading over open source forums for a way to communicate and transmit voice using data packets, he stumbled upon the Asterisk open source PBX. This led to all four of them installing Asterisk on a desktop computer, connecting it via an ATA to an analog phone and the internet. After reducing the cost of phone bills, the savings helped build a vacation fund.
The friend from Canada went back to visit his hometown. While there, he helped his neighbors set up the same system to receive and make international calls. At the request of a local internet café he also set up a Quintum E1 8 port switch for international call termination at local call tariffs and charged them a per minute fee. This created that first monetary transaction required to become an Entrepreneur. The hometown being an island country of 20 million people with a large diaspora in Canada, the 8 ports soon became 100s, leading to this friend quitting his day job and founding VoIPInvite Inc in Ontario, Canada and offering wholesale termination to carriers around the world who had calling minutes to destination.
When the telecom market became regulated by the government, VoIPInvite transitioned to a business pbx and voice service provider to US and Canadian businesses.
